Alaves striker in the frame

Confirmation has been received by Portsmouth Chairman Milan Mandaric that Pompey are hot on the trail of Alaves striker Ivan Alonso.

Signing of Alonso would certainly ease the burdon currently resting heavily on manager Harry Redknapp's shoulders following a succession of injuries which has sent the Blues spiralling into a striker crisis. Redknapp has cast his net far and wide in search of a new forward, with Uruguayan attacker Alonso emerging as a top target.

Mandaric has confirmed Pompey are attempting to conclude a deal for Alonso, but revealed they have other irons in the fire.

'I don't know how close we are, we are working on that and others if we do not get him,' Mandaric said.

'We are determined to get a top striker here.'
